Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, is attempting to recover approximately $6.3 billion following a cyberattack that the company and outside analysts are calling the largest of its kind ever recorded.
The exchange disclosed the incident on Thursday, according to NPR. Binance described the attack as complex, per the BBC, and has been working to freeze the affected funds in its aftermath.
Blockchain intelligence firms have attributed the attack to North Korea, according to NPR and Ars Technica. State-linked hacking groups from North Korea have previously been connected to large-scale cryptocurrency thefts, which authorities in multiple countries have said are used to fund government programs.
Ars Technica reported that Binance scrambled to freeze billions of dollars in the wake of the breach. The BBC noted that if the North Korea connection is confirmed, the incident would rank as the most significant cyberattack of its kind.
Further details about how the attack was carried out or how much of the stolen funds have been successfully frozen had not been widely reported at the time of publication.
